Thank you for the suggestion. I went to that web site and downloaded the instruction and then followed them. The effect was zero; things remained just the same.
For the time being at least, I'm going to leave things alone. It can take a really long time for a scan to get started, but if I leave the PC alone, it will get around to it eventually!! I only need to be very, very, very..... patient.
