The sony computers are not proprietery but rather, they are integrated. A sony computer can be upgraded but the sound, video, modem, NIC are all typically on the motherboard. Compaq, HP and gateway computers are typically more proprietery than the sony. If you want a good non integrated, non proprietery machine, you might want to look into a Micron or even certain Dell models. You have to remember that just about every manufacturer makes a entry level piece of junk machine that can be very integrated. Do your homework on components and motherboards. Check maximum PC and other web sites that rate components. Any questions, send me an email.
