Subject: CDROM Controller Failure

I have a IBM-compatible machine, running W98, which has its CDROM controller built into the motherboard. That controller has failed, for unknown reasons. I am considering using an accessory IDE controller board in one of the open slots, to bypass the failed on-board controller. Anybody see why that won't work? Any recommendations as to where/what kind to buy?
