One of the things you have to look at is name brands and quality of components. Although there are many reputable manufacturers in the industry, even the good ones usually have a horrible product they make.
It is good to have some sort of knowledge of what each component does and why certain ones may perform better than others.
I am not familiar with the store called Fry but I would imagine that they are trying to run the same promotions as virtually every other computer store in the country. Buy a cheap computer and get a $400 rebate when you sign up for 3 years of internet service. Who's to say that you will be happy with the internet service and if you aren't, TOUGH! You are tied into a 3 year contract with some crappy isp when you buy one of those machines.
The fact is, the quality of internet service you usually get from one of these companies (which keep in mind you are paying for for 3 years) is no better than a free internet service provider; and there are plenty of those out there as well. Yes, there are free isp that don't make you look at advertising banners as well.
As far as you being concerned about your husband buying parts and being sure that the computer works when he is done putting it together; Not even I can guarantee that. A lot of people don't realise that even the best computer parts sold sometimes don't work right out of the box.
A positive thing would be that if you buy all the parts from a wholesaler, typically the warranty you will get on that computer is going to be much better than anything you can buy in the store. Any further questions, email me.
