Subject: HP ScanJet 5200C Problem

I have trouble with an HP ScanJet 5200C that came with my Gateway Pentium III running Windows 98. The problem is that the scanner may or may not work right away when I try to use it.

The scanning process seems to begin as the drive motor makes a few encouraging sounds while getting ready to do its job and then suddenly, things just halt!

Recently, I've discovered that if I wait long enough after getting halted, anywhere from a minute to as long as fifteen minutes, the scanning process picks up where it left off and goes on ahead to completion. Then, however, the next attempted scan goes through the same delayed response scenario all over again.

Neither Gateway's technical support nor HP's technical support have been of any use whatever in this, yet I can't believe that my experience is unique.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you.
