Mike: Some manual transmissions specify the use of motor oil. The manufacturer must think the gear loading is not too much for motor oil to handle. Also, some trannys have bronze parts in them and at elevated temperatures the sulfur in some gear lubes could damage the bronze parts.
I supported a motorcycle drag racing team several years ago and the best I remember, they used 5W-30 in the tranny.
