The darkening of oil has many causes:dirt and dust, combustion byproducts, thermal degradation etc. Some oils are made to just a specification. Others are much more robust in their chemistry. A hydrotreated oil, or even better a full Poly alpha olefin (PAO)type synthetic will exhibit much more thermal stability. The use of such oils and a high efficiency oil filter will allow you to go far beyong 5000km. On all of my vehicles I use a synthetic. I change the filter every 10,000Km and top up the oil.I change out the oil about every 30,000km.
