We've adapted traditional Lean methodology to high capital metal processing industries (steel and aluminum mills) with excellent success,
The quickest impact is felt in two statistics: on-time delivery, and reduced inventory (and product cycle times). I'm trying to get some statistics on progress inside this industry. Can you share some data: on-time completions and on-time shipment (% on-time, how measured) and inventory turns (or days on-hand) compared to a few years ago. Do you promise a shipment date or delivery (at the customer site) date? Do you promise to the day or the week? I am also seeking information regarding the overall status of such "Lean" endeavors in the industry. Please post a response with the level of effort currently going on inside your mill / plant. Your help is greatly appreciated. Jack Harrison Senior Partner The Hands-On Group
