The only way I was able to do it without ending up with hundreds of little straight lines is the following:

go to Microsoft Word

in a new document, insert a line of text as 'WordArt', not as normal text

copy it to the clipboard

paste it into AutoCAD, using 'Paste special: AutoCAD entities'

The text will now be pasted as lines and curves. If you want to, you can modify the letters to 'polylines' and do a 'Spline' to smooth them.

Hope this helps.
