There are basicaly 3 types which are used nowadays. The bourdon type wich uses the pysical force of atmosperic presure, not acurate below about 25"hg, mainly used to make sure that all is well duing the initial pump down. Then there is the thermocouple type used between a rotary and a diffusion pump, can measure down to about 1 micron. And lastly there is the ionization gage wich can measure down to about 1x10ea-6 microns and is usuly placed on the input to a diffusion pump. Hope this helps.
