Lots of good work is still done by diffusion pumps. To have good vacuum conditions you should use a cold-trapped system. Of course the vacuun line geometry is one of the main factor for diffusion pump.One other thing is controlling the oil temperature in the diffusion pump.

Moreover, using the proper oil is much more important. You wont have any problemns if you use a good silicon based oil with a good cold trapped diffusion system.
