The decorative coating industry has been dramatically changed by the reactive PVD deposition of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides. Prior to there use decorative coatings were either electroplated materials such as gold or brass, which was protected by a lacquer or a PVD decorative coating which was reflective aluminum overcoated with a colored lacquer. The use of hard decorative coatings gives a longer live and a greater variety of colors and shades. This occured in the late 1980s. In the 1930s astronomical telescope mirrors went from being coated by chemically deposited silver, which limited the resolution, to PVD aluminum which then led to the development of the sealed beam headlight.
