Platinum black is a very fine power used for catalysis. It can be prepared by "gas evaporation" which is evaporation into a low pressure gas atmosphere such that there is gas phase collision and nucleation. The fine particle material deposit on the walls of the chamber. The platinum powder, like gold (gold black) prepared the same way, is black because of light trapping in the very low density deposit. The Japanese commercially prepare some of these "ultrafine" particles. Don Mattox
