I would expect problems with a graphite hearth liner. A vitreous carbon line would work better. I have used just Aluminum Oxide crucibles, but with a nicely controlled beam spot so I could keep the beam on the metal and not crack the crucible.

You might try filling your crucible with powdered silica, or Al2O3 or some other similar glassy powder. Light up the system for a short time and then look at the beam tracks in the fused particles in the crucible
