Thanks for your response! I do have a couple of very old books that deal with sputtering thin films,
and the technique does not require a diffusion pump. It uses just plain air as the purge gas. I think
to have a coating thick enough for decorative purposes, the sputtering technique won't work (at least
within a reasonable time period!). I will try to locate books on the subject of evaporating metals (making
mirrors, etc.). I hope to realize a process that is quick, safe, and reasonably inexpensive.
