Saint-Gobain Industrial Ceramics Inc. is a technical leader in advanced and industrial ceramics and is the world's leading producer of ceramics for thermomechanical and mechanical applications. NRDC performs materials and process R&D for Saint Gobain and Norton businesses. NRDC combines state-of-the-art laboratories, analytical capabilities, prototype, and pilot operations. NRDC is seeking a Senior Research Engineer to provide technical expertise in the area of engineering analysis and furnacing.
40% Construct engineering-analysis models (finite element, analytic, closed-form) appropriate to project end-goals. Carry out analysis to establish thermal, mechanical, and fluid-flow conditions of materials or products in processes and applications. Perform quality checks to ensure accuracy of analysis results. The incumbent should carry out all phases of these tasks with minimal supervision.
40% Take the lead to develop interpretation, summaries, and opinions of the analysis results appropriate to the project end-goals. Document conclusions in technical memo format. Present and discuss analysis findings with customers. The incumbent should carry out these tasks with minimal supervision. The incumbent will typically serve as the primary analysis and project contact with customers.
20% Provide engineering support to the R&D furnacing activity within NRDC. Contribute to incident investigation, compile incident reports, and contribute to recommendations for remedial action. May lead or direct furnacing personnel for furnacing related tasks.
Skills and Requirements:
Skills associated with a Ph.D or MS with 0-5 years of industrial experience in mechanical engineering or applied mechanics. In-depth theoretical knowledge and practical experience in:
1. Using finite-element methods for the solution of thermomechanical, heat-transfer, electromagnetics, and fluid/CFD problems.
2. State-of-the-art FEA software (e.g. ANSYS), scientific programming (e.g. Fortran), and UNIX.
3. Theory and computer methods of solid/fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
4. Brittle material design, probabilistic strength theory, and mechanics of materials (linear and nonlinear).
The ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with customers, staff, and management is required.
Environment & Physical Requirements:
The position is located in a laboratory environment with some exposure to chemicals, powders & materials of various compositions. Frequent standing, sitting, computer & telephone usage. May occasionally lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs.
