Group Assigned: During my stay at Tata Steel, I have been placed in the Communication Group of Automation Division and have developed expertise in technical as well as business areas. My major assignment have been in the field of System Development using RF based Telemetry Products and may be summarised as follows:
1. GPS Based Truck Dispatch System:
At West Bokaro Coal Mines of Tata Steel, automatic tracking of 67 Nos. of Heavy Earth Moving Machines (Dumpers & Excavators) has been implemented using the concept of GPS & RF Telemetry for online mapping, status monitoring of all the dumpers & excavators inside the mines leading to increased productivity, reducing operating delays and online engine monitoring of HEMMs. The MIS information collected & compiled at Central Control Server is further spread over Wireless LAN to different remote offices within West Bokaro for effective process & resource management.

2. Radio Communication Network for Coke Plant:
Higher Level Automation for Coke-Plant was implemented using various interfaces with Machine PLCs and Level II DecAlpha Server with the help of Radio Data Networking. The end objective of the system integration was to provide reliable and real time process related data exchange among communication nodes (machines) moving across the coke-plant and the main base station. System design and software development has taken care of reporting almost all kind of communication errors at Main Base Station (Central Server) or to the Machine PLCs, Remote downloading / monitoring of s/w to communication system at the site, Redundancy for all possible communication path, Best possible implementation of Application Layer in the system, Network healthiness check facility at Main Base Station, Facility of accommodating huge data traffic over the network, Automatic change over to degraded mode of operation incase of Central Server is out of operation etc., which are some of the features of developed Radio Communication Network for Coke-Plant. And the reduction in the man power, increased comfort in operation, increased life of the coke-plant, improved production, better quality of coke etc. are some of the resulting benefits of the project.

3. WLAN for Coil Tracking and Transport System (CTTS):
Wireless LAN complying IEEE 802.11 (2.4 GHz) has been implemented for connecting Overhead Cranes (14 Nos.)and RF Hand Held Terminals (16 Nos.) with Digital Unix Server for the development of Coil Tracking & Transport System. Crane Computer on one side is connected to Crane PLC over Modicon MODBUS protocol and on the other side exchanges data with CTTS Central Server over standard TCP/IP protocol using 2.4 GHz Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum technology. Similar technology has been used to provide connectivity between HHT & the Server. Both Crane and HHT application s/w are exchanging information using client / server architecture.

4. Mobile Tracking System:
Non GPS based System was developed for tracking guided vehicle (like locos etc.) by using the RF ID System and pulse encoder. The Central Station having GUI has the real time information of the mobile units and also sends instructions to the mobile operator. The system has been useful in planning resources moving across the plant through tunnels and tough conditions.

5. Remote Data Logging For Ladle Identification & Tracking System:
Passive RF Tags / Reader system has been used in identifying ladles carrying hot metals and communicating the ladle Tag ID through serial link and then forwarding the information to VAX system through dial-up modems. Also various process related data are uploaded / downloaded in LD#2 / Slab Caster VAX system through RF Hand Held Terminals connected to server over TCP/IP protocol using 2.4 GHz Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum radios. Remote data logging inside the yard is done via GUIs developed using Form 3.0 and ported in HHTs under terminal emulation. Required RF Coverage for HHT has been obtained by suitable placement of 500 mW Universal Access Points connected to VAX system over Ethernet.

6. Paging Data Networking:
Server communication software for onsite Radio Paging System was developed to facilitate alphanumeric paging from anywhere through LAN connected PC / terminal of Tata Steel's wide computer network. System has been found useful across the plant and also alphanumeric paging has become operator independent.
Platforms: SUN OS, Motorola Paging System comprising People Finder etc.; Programming: 'C'.
7. Remote File Transfer / Chat Facility Between Design Cell and Growth Shop:
UHF Data Communication link was established between Tisco Design Cell and Tata Growth Shop (approx. 10 Kms distance) by using Motorola DARCOM radios for transferring design files and chat facility.

8. Radio Modem Development:
For Data Communication between PCs / PLCs by using various types of RF Transmitters / Receivers (from Woods & Douglas, Radiometrix U.K. etc.), FSK Modem cards was developed and further the modem card was upgraded by using microcontroller based Intelligent card for data packetisation, error check, serial handshaking with DCE for asynchronous communication. These cards alongwith suitable RF Tx / Rx are used basically in remote control of Overhead Cranes, Locomotives.
9. Radio Planning & Surveying System:
RPSS System is under development for identifying & recommending frequency spots for new projects inside Tisco to Wireless Planning & Co-ordination wing, in order to achieve better management of Radio Frequencies, Coverage and avoid interference.
