We at Tool & Instrument Makers have recently started pouring aluminum castings in machined aluminum molds.
This makes for:
Low cost tooling for castings.
Faster leadtime for first production runs
This process is really useful in pouring components near net shape and then finish machining. For example, if a customer is having a component completley manufactured from a solid piece of aluminum, we can pour the product in a near net shape form, and then machine the part. Lower cost of material being used, lower machining cost due to huge reduction in machining time. Same high quality product.
