My little mill with the moto tool spindle
will not do steel , It is marginal with light brass and aluminium
I have stopped working on my new mill as my M.S.
is making it too hard to make the spindle parts I needed
I have now ordered a mini mill $500 from harbor freight and will add steppers to it
It appears to be very similar in size and etc to the Maxmill
On the 7X10 lathe site I monitor many of them have this mini mill and I've not heard complaints about not being able to do steel
They seem to have the machine size in mind and avoid stainless and tempered steel
You have to remember that this size machine is for jewelery and small steam engines not new gears for the kids 4 wheeler
I would call MAX as the last time I talked to them they were very helpful , ask for someone technical
I would guess that they are asked this question often
Oh! Some have been reenforcing the mast to the table to make it more regid
I hope this helps
