Discussions on problems associated with notched beams can be found, I think, on section about variable stresses.

: Several years ago I came across a steel notched beam model in a mechanical engineering book. Deformation of the model was described as the notched beam was stretched. Unfortunately, I did not write down the source and am having problems finding the book again. Any reference dealing with the deformation of a notched beam would be appreciated.
