I am looking at the alternatives to conventional welding systems for a specific requirement which I have to find and justify.
I have to fuse weld a 0.25 thick 16" Dia Stainless Steel Lid to a Container of the same Material grade (304L).
This process has to take place in a highly radioactive cell and therefore any maintainence necessary to the process has to take place via remotely operated Master Slave Manipulator's.
Therefore I would suggest any system proposed for this application must be virtually fully Automatic and require very little maintenance.
I believe a Nd-Yag laser would be the better option due to the system of fibre optics to transport the beam to the work piece? I would like more information on how the lenses/mirrors used in the optic heads of these systems stand up to a radiation environment, if that is at all possible!

Can You assist me in my quest?
