Hi Tim,
I recall, a few years ago, there was a "Voice Changer" toy that modifies a human voice so that it sounds like Darth Vater or some Sci-Fi type of Robot. I don't recall where it was sold (Radio Shack? Toys R Us?). If you could find a similar toy, you wont have to build any circuitry. Another off-the-shelf item that makes wierd sounds is a Digital Delay effects pedal for a guitar. But instead of a guitar, plug a microphone into the input, and an audio amplifer on the output. You can adjust the delay knobs to get some unique "robot" type sounds. I've done this about a year ago, and it works fairly well!
