Greetings. I am not surprised that you are finding difficulty in amplifying the reflected U/S pulses. There are a number of quite involved circuit considerations to be taken into account.
Rather than get too involved in this forum, I believe that you may find useful information in the Data Sheets on National LM1821, and TI types TL851, 852, and 853, in which this is covered. You may also find info in Application Notes listed in Polaroid's Website (www.polaroid-oem.com). I can E-Mail you the LM1812 data, if desired, and I also have (somewhere) the data sheets on the TI chips. The LM1812 is now obsolete, but I have no current info on availability of the TI series.
