I use a 9 volt battery and a lamp to test the SCR.

There are a number of modes of failure that you can test for.

1-Shorted SCR
2-Leaky SCR (insulation breakdown)
3-Shorted Gate
4-Open Gate
5-Non Latching

Some of these test require an Ohmmeter.

What type of SCR are you testing ?

1-Stud Mounted SCR
2-Disk or hockey puck

For the best results, the SCR should be removed from the unit and bench tested.
