Hi Boyd...

I'm unclear about what you wish to control, however, it sounds to me as though you need to get into embedded sytems!! That is to control your system via a microcontroller (MCU).

8-bit MCU's are very cheap these days. To get you up and running quickly I can suggest PICSTART Plus from microchip. THis is a development system including Assembler, Chip programmer and many Application Notes.

It's just a thought... Using a microcontroller you can program delays for as long or as short as you wish (yes. Including Years). Using a Real Time Clock you can time such long periods reasonably accurately.

If you are still reading this and you have adobe acrobat installed on your PC., then go to

http://www.microchip.com/download/tools/picmicro/program/picstart/51034h.pdf

There are other such DevTools out there, also try Motorola, Holtek, Phillips, STMicroelectronics, Mitsubishi etcetera..

I hope this helps...
