I think that you refer to a device called a "Theremin", originally developed in the mid-thirties by, I recall, RCA. There have been many later developments since that time and many construction projects published by such magazines as "Radio-Electronics", and "Popular Electronics". If you look up Gernsback Publications on-line, they will show indices listing such articles going back over issues of several decades. They offer a reprint service of any article of interest.
