An external antenna is almost a must in a car. A car is a mobile faraday shield and blocks a lot of your TV signal. And once the engine is running and the car is rolling, there's a lot of crap on the 12 volt system that could be getting into the TV and upsetting the sync. There's all kinds of hash from the alternator and especially the heater/air blower motor. You might need a low-pass line filter on the 12 volt line to the TV and definitely need a TV antenna. Cars being what they are will constantly be changing the orientation of your antenna, so don't expect Primestar reception out on I-70.
