Subject: 8051 infra red remote interfacing

I am constructing a college project, whereby I want to run 10 different led chaser programs that are chosen and executed according to which button (0 to 9) on an infra remote control is pressed. I have manufactured the minimum
system board that includes an Intel 8051 and led drivers, etc.. and am fine with the software in writing the led chaser routines.. My lack of knowledge is with the remote..
Is a remote with a low /short pulse train desirable?
Do I require 10 different interrupt codes? If I'm using an interrupt to trigger a particular led pattern, can that interrupt be interrupted again for the next button press? Or do I need the RETI used?
How would the data from the remote through the infra red sensor be decoded to choose the corresponding sub routine? Does the pulse train directly decide which led chaser routine to run, with software making the comparisons etc.
I understand there is a lot of research needed here and different approaches can be taken, but any advice on ways to approach this would be much
appreciated.
