Dick Smith Electronics in Australia have been selling counterfeit
Motorola brand MJ15003 and MJ15004 devices these devices when cut
open contain two chips each about 3mm by 3mm wired in parrallel (yep
no emitter resistors) instead of the usual single chip about 6mm by
6mm. if used in any real application these devices will swiftly fail.
The fraud devices can be recognised from the outside by the country
code which is MEX190 (instead of MEXICO) and the date code which
contains alphabetic characters (genuine date codes contain all
numerals). From the outside they appear to be a neat job and there
would be no other reason to doubt their authenticity.

DSE has placed a 'QC hold' on these devices and is withdrawing them
from sale but has made no attempt to issue a recall or otherwise let
their customers know.

if you have any such devices return them to your supplier (working
or not) and demand a refund.

I am leaving this message here in order to let as many possible victims
of this fraud know and also as their is no reason to suspect this fraud
is confined to Australia

P.S we have bought devices at random from other retailers in sydney
but so far these devices have only turned up at DSE.
