PID stays for proportional, integral and differential control system. In practise you will apply a proportional ( to the deviation ), integral ( over the time )or differential ( delta of position deviation ) signal for a position deviation.
Start using a proportional correction to your sensor, if this is too reactive ( overshoot ), delay your correction.
