It would be possible to detect the presence of a wire rope with an Eddy Current encircling coil. The wire rope would need to feed though the coil as well as support rings fore and aft of the coil. These would prevent the rope from sagging and making contact with the coil's Inner Diameter. The coil would be hooked up to an eddy current instrument which would be nulled with the rope positioned inside the coil. If the rope broke, there would be a large electrical impedance change which would be sensed by the instrument, setting off an alram. The whole assembly could mount on rollers attached to the support structure on which the rope is wound. This would permit horizontal travel of the assembly over the range of distance the rope moves as it feeds out and is taken up.
