Richard, I can't tell you the best system overall to use, but I can help to eliminate some possibilities.

If you're controlling a robot, there are two optical systems. On is IR control similar to the TV and VCR remotes; the other uses the video from the TV. Seems to me that there were some Sesame Street toys that interfaced to "hidden" vodeo commands. Trouble with both systems, especially the TV video system, is that they're line-of-sight and limited in range. If the robot is going to be in another room, you'll either need an IR extender or need to use an RF link.

I don't know of any turn-key systems.
