Subject: Residual Molybdenum in 17-4PH

We have received a Master Heat from our alloy supplier with a "residual" Mo of
0.43%. We have now had several lots fail the 180 ksi tensile requirement for AMS
5344D in the range of 174 - 179 ksi. The yield (160 ksi min) is between 162 and
167 ksi; the elongation (6% min) is 12% and over and the red of area (15% min)
is over 25%.
Since the furnace charts and furnace calibration checks out, we are looking at the
effect of the moly on the transition points of the alloy.
