Subject: mp3 saloon player

I've in mind to build my own MP3 saloon player. For that, I will use a CD-Rom unit, a microcontroller (I'm thinking of a 68HC11F1 but if you have some suggestions, feel free) and a specialized chip (like the last one from ST). But I'm looking for some ideas as i'm a bit novice in electronics and microcontrollers.
Is there someone who can tell me how a CD-Rom is built. What I want to know is how can I do to address a MP3 file on a CD-Rom from the 68HC11 ? At wich address is located the 'FAT' ? Is there someone who know where I can get a complete description of a CDROM architecture ?
Thanks a lot for answering.
